Sheffield is built on hills, and the difference between a flat street and a steep one decides whether someone still gets out. People here often stay in the same neighbourhood for decades, so leaving for a care home means losing a community as much as a house.
Winter matters more here than in most cities. Ice on a sloped path stops people leaving the house for weeks, so it is worth agreeing early with your helper who grits, who shops when it is bad, and what happens if they cannot get up the hill.
Anyone can ask their council for a care needs assessment, whatever their savings, and it costs nothing. Under the Care Act 2014 the council must carry one out where someone appears to need care and support. A separate financial assessment decides who pays.
